Yesterday I successfuly installed the 14 latest updates on 2 of my home
computers but on my main computer the installation failed at update 1 and
hung the computer. It continued to cause trouble so today I did a "repair
Windows" installation from the Windows XP disc. Since completing that
installation I have installed 46 of the 68 downloads, but it continues to
stop at that point. I tried a few times. This time the problem is Update
KB922616. I checked postings related to this and the best info seemed to be
related to the posted question from allegro on 2006/08/23. But the file
details noted by NewScience bear no resemblance to those I find in my
c;\windows\softwaredistribution\download sub-directory. The other computers
work but mine doesn't!
Any ideas?

Sorry about my post appearing 3 times! It kept crashing when I ticked the
"Notify me of replies" box, so I thought each of my posts did not load!

I've been having the download problems myself. I downloaded a copy of
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0. You should, find a link in the FAQ
section of Microsoft download. I was able to download the updates
individually.

I also found, as a result of using MBSA that Microsoft Firewall wasn't
protecting my network connection, amongst other possible security flaws to my
system. Which I have been a ble to fix. Useful bit of software.

Thanks for that. I've downloaded MBSA and it notes only the missing updates,
which I know about already, but it doesn't seem to help me to download the
updates individually. Maybe I'm missing something.

I found the error code for this fault - it's 0X800706BE, if that's any help.
Now, after further fiddling I've managed to get all the other updates to
install except for this one and another: KB921398. The same error code
appears for that failed update.

KB921398 has been superseded *if* the OS is XP SP1 by KB921391.
If XP is now at SP2, then install 921398 prior to installing KB921391.

Both can be downloaded manually:
KB921398 -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

KB921391 -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-a55bc3165e3d
Save the files, close IE, then install them after rebooting between each
install and after the second one installs.

KB922616 can be downloaded from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Do they install now ?

Thanks! That has worked wonderfully well. I've now run the Baseline
Security Analyser and confirmed it.
