No matter what I have done that update will not install.
I have no problems with any of the other updates.
What the heck is the problem?
Is the use of a large hammer the only answer?

This will resolve the error but, IF the system does NOT or will NOT have
3GB of RAM installed, then suggest you Hide the update the next time it
is offered: http://www.petri.co.il/hide_updates_windows_vista.htm

If the system does or will have 3 GB of RAM installed, follow this step
by step after first making a *back up* of the registry and learning how
to restore it, please: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

1. Click on Start and in the Search box type in regedit

2. A new program will be listed in the same window. Now *right click*
regedit and then select the option 'Run as administrator'.

3. Now go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS and check if these three
values exist under the COMPONENTS key:

PendingXmldentifier
NextQueueEntryIndex
AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

5. Providing they do exist, delete the three above values by right
clicking them and choosing Delete.

6. Restart the computer, and Windows Update should now be working.

I tried everything you syggested but nothing worked.
How do you hide the update. Also is there a way to delete the update
history with out deleting the installed updates?

Does the system have or will it have 3 GB of RAM ?

How to Hide Updates in Vista
http://www.petri.co.il/hide_updates_windows_vista.htm

The above site also offers a method for getting the update installed and
mentions the same error code, 8000FFFF :

Cannot Install Update for Windows Vista KB929777
http://www.petri.co.il/hide_updates_windows_vista.htm

The update history shown in Vista or on the update web sites ?
I don't know how to do it in Vista but, for the web sites, I do. <w>

I have 4MB of RAM. Even before I added the 2 extra 2 GB I still got the
same error message. I try the othe site you suggested and let you know what
happened.

Thanks again.
