Since a few weeks WIndows update fails. It did cost me a lot of hours to
solve the problem, but without luck....

The KB938979 tries to install, system reboots, configures the system and
just before the logon screen my system reboots again, again configures the
system, then the logon screen appears.
After logon, my windows update shows the -just installed- update again and
the whole show starts over and over again.

I did remove the softwaredistribution folder as mentioned on the microsoft
site, but no luck.
Tried to download the file, and install it manually, but no luck.
Always the same symptomes.
At the mean time, also newer updates fail to install because of the first
one fails.

It is an annoying problem, because every startup will take at least 5
minutes because of the reboots and configuring.

Does anyone have _THE_ solution for me please?

Check the Services console from Start > Search > type in

services
Click OK or press Enter

Is the Software Licensing Service disabled ? If so, reenable it by
setting the Startup type to Automatic.

Thanks for your reply.

The mentioned service was already enabled and is set to "automatic".

Unfortunatly, so what should I try next?

See if these 2 updates help any. Download and SAVE:

Vista 32 bit
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
and
Vista 32 bit
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

After the downloads are completed close the browser and any other open
programs.
Install Windows6.0-KB940520-x86.exe first, restart if requested to.
Then install Windows6.0-KB939159-x86.msu.

Redownload KB938979 once more and SAVE it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...C-D3EB2071BBEC

When the download completes close the browser, *right* click
Windows6.0-KB938979-x86.msu and choose ' Run as administrator '.
Enter a password if one has been created and follow the prompts.
Restart after it installs.

STRONGLY advise you to temporarily DISABLE the installed antivirus
program prior to installing KB938979. Please consult the Help file or
the manufacturer's web site to learn how to acoomplish this.
You may want to disconnect the system from the internet/network while
the AV is disabled.

REMEMBER to reenable the AV after installing the update.

Thanks MowGreen for the efforts so far.

The final solution was, that for update KB938979 Vista needs the original
user and default folders on the original place.
The first thing I did after install, was to move the folders (in the
specified way) to a separate partition -- thus not longer at the default
place.
Therefor I made a few new "dummy" folders on the default folder and the
problem solved.

I found the solution after too manu hours here:
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=810750

Strange that such important information is not checked form the registry,
but "assumed" to be there.

Nice work, Frank. And, you're mowst welcome.
I've seen this behavior when a User deleted a Duhfault folder in
Scheduled Tasks, too.
One would think that one can move folders where they'd like them instead
of the Duhfault locations without such issues.
It appears the Vista doesn't care for such 'heretic' behavior.
Not good, IMHO.
