I've installed this update 13 times with no error code. It says successful
every time, and yet it keeps wanting to install this update again? Does
anyone know what the problem is or how to fix this?

It's sometimes wise to glance around before/while you are asking. It's
often surprising what one can find just by looking. ;-)

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

A search of this specific newsgroup alone for the past year turns up
several hits - just searching for "954430" in the message body, in fact,
I find I have responded to people with similar issues several times
over. I will repeat the answer I gave here - so it will be out there one
more time for anyone who wishes to search for it. ;-)

Also - you might want, for future reference, present your operating
system edition, version, service pack level, etc in your posting.

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version"
will give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response to this
message verbatim. ;-)

As for the update you mentioned...

Viewing the Knowledge Base Article for the update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954430

Under "Known issues with this security update", you might read this:

"This security update may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft
Update or on Windows Update if one of the system files is corrupted or if it
has not been updated correctly. For more information about this issue, click
the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base:

[941729] Security updates for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft Update or on Windows
Update"

Which naturally leads you here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729/

Titled: "Security updates for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
may repeatedly appear in the update list on Microsoft Update or on Windows
Update"

With this simple resolution:

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
2. At the command prompt, type
ren %windir%\System32\msxml4.dll msxml4.old
and then press ENTER.
**Note** After you press ENTER, you may receive the following
error message. "Cannot find the file specified."
Ignore this message, and go to step 3.
3. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER.
4. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.update.microsoft.com
5. Download and then install the latest MSXML security update.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2;
WinServer 2008) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your
next reply.

Has http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 been installed yet?

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009. Availability of
chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...4&gprid=582034 &
select appropriate category (i.e., Download issue; Installation issue;
Issues after you install a service pack).

I found a post from Rami (Microsoft Ansers Support Engineer) that helped
although I had to modify his instructions. Now I can't find his post to copy
an paste, but will tell you what I did. Apparently the auto update doesn't
properly install & that's why it keeps trying over and over again so you have
to install it manually. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to the
desktop. Right click on the file and click Run As. On one of the next couple
of screens, choose Administrator, enter password and then follow the
installation wizard. After you do that, then go to Security Update for MSXML
4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430) to manually download the update. Then just like
above, right click and run as administrator. Since it already installed on my
computer but kept trying to update I chose to delete the installation. After
it was deleted, I ran thru the above again and installed the update. Once I
restarted my computer, the update stopped appearing. Hope this works for you.
