Update KB973904 keeps getting cancelled

Yesterday I noticed disk activity on my PC and guessed that it was
applying updates. After it quieted down I logged onto my Administrator
account to check (I like to see what's been updated), and sure
enough there had been updates. But what was listed (after going
to Microsoft Update Home and clicking "Review your update history")
was four successful updates and then one, KB973904, with a grey
circle in the Status column, meaning Cancelled.

This I haven't seen before! There were also several High Priority
updates which hadn't been applied, and I noticed the little yellow
shield on the task bar at the bottom right of the screen telling
me that "Updates are ready for your computer". So I clicked on
the yellow shield, and the update process started again, and when
it was done there was a second cancelled KB973904 entry, and none
of the remaining updates had been applied.

So I left it at that yesterday, and when I turned on my computer
today I noticed more disk activity, and when I checked for updates
the only new entry was a third cancelled KB973904. So it's starting
to look like a problem! Anyone have any idea what is going on?

For the record, my OS is WinXP SP3, I'm using Microsoft Update (as
opposed to Windows Update), the updates that were applied successfully
yesterday were KB890830, KB971737, KB974392, and KB976416, and the
updates that remain unapplied are KB973904, KB976325, KB970430,
KB974318, KB955759, and KB976884.
