Update keeps turning itself back on?????

I have a Windows XP HE SP2 system. I turned off Automatic Updating, but every few weeks
the security icon again appears in my System Notification area, and when I open it
Automatic Updating is enabled again. Does anyone have a clue how Automatic Update would
keep turning itself back on? I am not on a network, and am the only person who uses this
system. Or, is there a service that I can disable, or a registry key/string that I can
edit or delete to permanently turn off Automatic Updating?

That IS the problem, it resets itself to Automatic Recommended and IS on. I am not at
that system now, so I cannot access the registry, but will look at those sub keys.

In the given situation, you will see a prompt about Automatic Updates being off. You only
need to click the X button to close the window.
Also, it is unusual that XP would turn AU back on by itself.

Take a look at this registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

On sub-keys AUOptions & ResetAU
do they have a value of 1

Zone Alarm Standard and AVG Free, on all of my systems, and this is the only system that
has this ongoing problem.

Those should ok as far as your symptom is concerned. Is this a home pc, or in a company where perhaps your system administrator has put in group policies for updates ?

Home PC, Dell, not networked, vanilla configuration just like the others, same fire wall
and antivirus as the others with the same settings. Only this one system opts to turn on
the Automatic Update by itself about every three weeks. True, I can turn it off again,
but if the system is on 24/7 it will update itself when it turns the Automatic Update back
on, which is what I do not want.
