[Update Loop] Repost after solution attempt - still have the problem

I am pasting the contents of my previous thread (short enough anyway).
The problem persists. I further Googled for the hexadecimal error
number. There are a number of Google hits to Experts-Exchange and I am
wondering if it is worth buying the answer?

Again, I am stuck in a loop where each update attempt fails with the
"You must reboot your computer..." and the hex number 0x8DDD0007.

What may be the cause is a poorly applied in-place upgrade that [was]
intended to remedy a virus (not my solution) and using the previous
Windows 2000 Professional "WINNT" directory. The previous solution
provider asserted some system files were damaged and thus the problem.
He gave up and returned the PC.

Any other ideas?

Happy Thanksgiving,

MikeC

Reboot required message is generated:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate\RebootRequired

If the key exists the message is generated by WU and it fails to work
further causing
[Error number: 0x8DDD0007].

Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may
require you to
reinstall your operating system. Use the information provided at your
own risk.

The solution is to remove the key (the reboot required entry only) so
there would be
only

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate\AutoUpdate
without the RebootRequired entry.

This was why I re-posted the question. Removing that entry from the
registry did not solve the problem. However, the key re-appeared. I
also performed a complete AV and Antispyware scan to no additional
discovery nor remedy.
