Hi Guys,

I am having troubles with my computer since Nov 6 after a failed update of

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) and reoccurring update
notifications. I saw a lot of complaints and tried to gather info. Followed
advices from MSoft site and support guy. to no avail.

I hope somebody from this group can help.

I have XP Pro, SP2 host for ISC and Win 2000 Pro - client. Each has one user
on with Admin rights.

Internet connection is still alive on both and I can see W2000 from XP

but w2000 lost site of XP shared drive

During my investigation I found the following mess on XP:

- Cannot disable connection

"It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection

may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it

may have been initiated by another user or system account."

I am the only User with Admin rights.

- WMI is corrupt info on advanced tab of connection properties

(I did try the technic suggested by Microsoft about forcing an auto-recover

of the default information stored in the repository when WMI is corrupted.
It didn't)

- Attempt to restart WMI service (and most of others) fail with err
1068 -

dependency service or group fail to start

- "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated

service is not running. Do you want to start Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ISC) service?"

- "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ISC)

service."

- Symantec NAV 2005 Live Update is Off and cannot be set back On

- Task Schedule service cannot be started error 1717

- Dependencies on ALL services cannot be seen because "Win32: the
dependency service or group fail to start" error

- Group policies: "Access denied"

- Cannot work with any item of the Event Viewer: "Unable to complete
operation. Interface unknown"

MERCY!

Thanks in advance

PS

Just before I wrote this XP was "Preparing for stand by." and remained in
Nirvana till push of reset button.

In Update history I have dozens of "green" ((KB890830) and already 17
(KB896424)'s in red with question mark

Similar problems here with both KB890830 and KB896426. After installing the
updates: (1) Norton Security shows up disabled (2) MSN Messenger will no
longer sign on (3) and some websites including this one will not load!

Fortunately I had a prior restore point and now I am back to normal but I
get reoccuring updates (3 times) and always the same problem after
installation.

Microsoft wants to charge me $35 because they have a problem. Must be a
great way to make a few extra bucks!

Any solutions out there?

Hi CGS,
I have just NAV's LiveUpdate disabled and mostly because Task Scheduler
Service is gone
Concerning websites - it looks like fine but what I noticed recently:
sometimes in order to return to previous page I have to push Back button 2-3
times when you can notice beloved 127.0.0.1 localhost blinking at the
left corner of IE status bar.
Unfortunately when I looked at my the restore point(s) - the earliest I can
find is straight AFTER the first faulty autoupdate and nothing before. Isn't
it ironic?
If you are annoyed by reoccurring notifications of already installed
updates there is a way to hide them. In case you don't have the info just
reply here and I'll pass a few words MS Support i've received. It is not a
solution - rather temporary stress relief . Cost is : minus $35 :-)
As a matter of fact update related support must be free as declared by
LittleSoft.
Cheers
PS It looks like a huge heavy wave of autoupdate hit many users recently.
Cry and tears are all over the Internet. I may suspect it is has something
to do with that introduced DISadvantage Evaluation (just slightly)
