Update menu in windows update

when using windows update, on my two computers which both have legit copies
of XP PRO with SP2. When I go the site, it asks for custom/express. I always
choose custom. After scanning and brining up the available updates, if I
click on any menu choice on the left, it immediately pops up the defaut
windows update page in the right pain where the list of updates would appear.
It is like seeing a page within a page within a page. However, if I hold down
left control, and then click it, it opens a blank tab and then displays the
page correctly. I have turned off all popup/phising software on both comps,
antivirus included. Does anyone know what this means? Or perhaps how to fix
it? thanks in advance

Same problem here. Therefore, cannot update anything but critical.

Same prob here too. But well. you still can install non-critical updates,
like what Icehunter said, you just need to control left click on the buttons
(Software, Optional; Hardware, Optional...) on the left pane, or you can
middle click/wheel click on them if you are using IE7, which gives the
function of opening it on a new window. A new IE blank page window will pop
up, but the Windows Update page will change its content according to what you
chose.
