I use Win2K Pro SP4. i am running MS VM v 5.00.3310. Windows update keeps
showing an update for VM. when i run it, i get an error saying that 'this is
a protected system file and need a newer version or newer service pack..."

i have tried to update using 3 different methods (windows update, try to
install v 5.00.3805, try to install c 5.00.3810) and can NOT update my VM.

HELP!!!

Marshall,

Are you trying to download and install the update while on the Windows
Update site or are you downloading it and then trying to install it ?

Suggest you download and save it, then close IE, and install it.

HOW TO Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog

Marshall & Moe,
I suppose this is kind of 'retro' of me but I cling to where I can get
MS-Java-VM still. I think this was wannadoo before.

Version 3805 is needed if you haven't any MS-Java-VM installed. Then just
update in sequence: 3809, 3810, Iinstalled in that sequence. (Reboot between
each install) OR, there's an 'All in one installer' ( just the thought has
me scratching my head) download AND an MS-Java-VM 'Removal Tool', One stop
shopping! Check to see what MS-Java-VM you may have, if any, via the
'Tutorial/JVM Test' link...scroll and it shows up in the slot there. Don't
forget to enable the MS-Java-VM tick boxes in your 'Internet Options' as
well, after the install. Did I leave anything out? Microsoft 'says' they
will 'support' MS version until December 31, 2007. For us small fish though,
best to look out for ourselves. Well, I've already burned those 3 above
to CD. Not taking ANY chances. Anyway, my old links were useless, but I came
up with this. Good luck, Jo
