The same old cryptic and not helping Microsoft's messages! Securtiy Update
for .NET Framework refuses to install without a clue about what bothers it. I
don't care about the update, but I can't seem to remove the relevant package.
As a result, I am always being informed about an update pending installation
and then I get a plain failure notice with code 0x643.

What can I do to install it or remove it and get away with it???

This happens if you have a beta version of .NET Framework installed, instead
of the proper released version.

Try this:

The following is a revised version of an earlier post by TKang:

Note:
a. Some ATI VGA users may need to disable/exit the Catalyst Control Center
(which uses .NET) before updating the framework.
b. Users of Windows Live OneCare must disable that application before
removing or updating the Framework.

1: Turn automatic updates off.

2: Download .NET 2.0 (for 32-Bit) at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

OR

2a: Download .NET 2.0 (for 64-Bit) at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

3: Use control panel Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Microsoft .NET
Framework, Version 2.0 and reboot. Do not touch .NET Framework 1.1.

3a: see note below at step 7.

4: Install Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (for 32-bit: dotnetfx.exe
3/22/2006) or (for 64-bit: NetFx64.exe 3/30/2006) and reboot.

5: Then run MS Update (and install KB917283) then reboot.

6: Turn automatic updates on (assuming that is your preference).

7. If this procedure failed to allow update 917283 to work, then repeat the
procedure, adding the following at step 3a:
Download http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools...eanup_tool.zip and
unzip it. Run the enclosed application, and select to clean up .NET
Framework 2.0. Now continue above from step 4.

Update:

What we still are running into with a number of gaming communities is the
..NET 2.0 was not the MS FEB06 release on their PC's using WinXP-x86. I have
seen issues (Corrupted .NET) from reinstalling/overwriting .NET framework;
including VGA-Card install discs and a couple outdated download sites (not
MS). This also happens if you have a beta version of .NET Framework
installed, instead of the released version (FEB06). For whatever reason...
The .NET 2.0 is screwed up and MS seemingly has not caught it through
automatic updates.

Update: To correct the situation is to completely uninstall v2.0 and
reinstall it. KB917283 apparently needs to the FEB06 .NET update to install.

Warning: Some items that rely on .NET 2.0/3.0 may be needed to be reloaded.

Note:
a. Some ATI VGA users may need to disable/exit the Catalyst Control Center
(which uses .NET) before updating the framework, and may need to
uninstall/install the Catalyst 6.6 package/drivers.

b. Users of Windows Live OneCare must disable that application before
removing or updating the Framework. Other Firewalls and “Anti-Anything”
software may need to be disabled. This is why I suggested having the
downloads on the HDD first.

Robin, Just wantd to let you know I found my cure to the KB917283 .Net
Framework 2.0 issue I was having. It is.....
I downloaded both .Net Framework 2.0 and KB917283 to a folder on my PC. I
turned WLOC's AV, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall off. Opened Security Center
and turned off Automatic updates. (WLOC really complaining now). Stopped
Norton Ghost Services and active tasks. Exited Windows Defender. Exited
Windows Live Messenger. Then exited all other programs showing in the
notification area.

I then opened "Add and Re move Programs" from Control Panel and uninstalled
the KB917283 Update. Then uninstalled .Net Framework 2.0. (.Net Framework
2.0 still showed in add & remove programs after it was uninstalled, so I
clicked uninstall again, and a popup stated that .Net Framework 2.0 was
uninstalled and did I want to remove it from the Add and Remove listings, I
clicked yes and it was gone.

I then opened the folder where I had downloaded .net Framework 2.0 and
installed it. After that I installed KB917283. Both installed without a
problem. I then Opened WLOC and re-engaged the spyware, AV, and Firewall.
And then I turned automatic updates back on. I then rebooted. But when I
rebooted and Windows was shutting down, an error message popped up and
stated "Aspnet_state.exe had an application error." The PC continued to
reboot before I could copy the rest of the error message.

The PC rebooted and (finally!) did not state that I needed the KB917283
update. Then went to Microsoft Update and found I needed no updates. So
KB917283 finally took.

I reboot again and received the same error message and the PC continued to
reboot. When it rebooted, I changed the Aspnet_state.exe service from
automatic to manual and rebooted the PC. This time no error message and no
other problems found (so far).
