update never does anything

Hi,

Config: XPHome with SP2 and a lot of security updates and
Norton Antivirus 2005 and XP firewall enabled.

I used to do windows updates without problems but recently
in the last month or two it's stopped. The web page loads and
there are what look like frames at the top and left but nothing
appears in the main part of the browser window. There's no
activex warning, no errors, no blocked popups, just nothing
at all.

I did install the MS anti-spyware utility around the same time
but I uninstalled that a week ago (because I have my start
menu at the right side so of course it was no use to me) but
it made no difference.

I've also noticed that I get JS errors on pages that I never used
to get them on, including lots of microsoft pages. I don't know
what I've done but my IE is almost unusable. I've tried restoring
everything (security/privacy) back to default/medium settings
and that doesn't help. Whenever I try and debug the JS errors
(using Visual Studio .NET) there's never any code to see so
I'm getting no useful into there.

Thanks Carey but I came here because I had no luck with the
troubleshooter. It lists lots of errors and the reason for them. I
don't get any errors, I just get nothingness. As for not being
able to install some updates or programs, I don't get a list so I
never get that far.

Use windows update to get the KBnnnnnn numbers of the critical updates, use
microsoft download center, All Downloads Search to find and download each
critical update, Update should start working. This mostly fixed mine, it was
all caused by upgrading to XP SP2. I have NAV, so I disabled the Windows
firewall.

LOL !! One thing I never expected to have to do is turn off """Microsoft"""
Windows Firewall. If there's one program it's going to allow through the
firewall it's going to be it's own Windows update but it seems not. After
turning off the firewall completely Windows update went ahead and found
10 updates and started downloading them.

I don't recommend this to anyone who doesn't also have a router firewall
and/or Norton Antivirus taking care of worm protection.

thanks erike

Well, after 10 updates and a reboot I hoped it might fix my
"windows update from within IE" but it didn't, that still just
sits at the "looking for the latest version of windows update"
and nothing ever happens.

But that's not so important, I have windows updates set to
automatically download updates in the control panel so I
am getting them all.

Gotta fix my IE separately I guess

Thanks again Erike
