Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this
time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security
warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software.

this message appears but thats it nothing more whats going on???

That didn't solve the problem either, but I found the solution in the update
troubleshooter section. I had to type "regsvr32 jscript.dll" in the Run box
and that fixed the problem. Thanks for the suggestions.

I spoke too soon. It fixed the problem for that one time only. When I later
tried the update site it wouldn't work again, even when I typed "regsvr
jscript.dll" again.

You are a life saver "dak". Thanks thanks thanks. I was getting "entry point
not found errors" until I added "/s " to the regsvr32 command line. The
addition of the other dll files probably helped too (jscript, atl, softpub,
wuweb, msxml3).

Interesting situation with windows update site on my computer. I tried the
command sequence listed (several times) to no avail. However, if I go to
the update site and click on one of the "Other Options" links such as
"Settings", "Admin Options", etc., and then click on the "Back" button to go
back to the update page it works! What is that all about?
