Update no work

I've been trying to upgrade to service pack 2 through the windows update site
with no success. It just displays a message that goes something like
this:"Looking for the newest version of windows update program".The longest
I've had the patience to wait for something to happen was about 20
minutes.Should I wait longer?Or could the site be out of order at the moment.

I also have the automated windows update ON,but my comp isn't updating at all.

Also I should mention that it did start updating something the first time I
went to the site, but after the text "registering 100% ready" nothing
happened, and I notced that my hard drives light went on without ever turning
off again, and my dvd drives light started flashing rapidly.I thought this was
pretty weird also. They went back to normal as soon as I closed
explorer(version 6).

I haven't found anything on this from the faq's nor the troubleshooting
section

Any advice?

Hi Jamppa,

Give this a try and see if it resolves the problem.........

Go to Start>Run and key in:
net.exe stop wuauserv
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wups.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll

Start>Run and key in:
net.exe start wuauserv

Now try the Windows Update site.

Hi, I did try what you recommended but it did not work for me. Obviously, you
are one of the most talented on this thread. What else can I do?

Are you using any other pop-up blocker software or, perhaps, Google Toolbar
or Yahoo Toolbar (I believe both of these toolbars have built-in pop-up
blockers)? If so, then you'll have to configure the pop-up blocker to allow
popups from the Windows Update site.
