When I run Windows Update, processing stops when the screen says "Checking
for the latest version of update software..." Nothing further happens.

Hi Cris,
I'm having the same problem. Does IE freeze too?

Same here. Running Win Server 2003, Std Edition. After installing SP1,
Windows Update acts like it is scanning and returns the error 0x80244019.
Previous to SP1, I had to connect to
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp before grabbing
updates. The Event Viewer Application log shows: Failed auto update
retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from:
<http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt>
with error: This network connection does not exist. I looked up Source:
crypt32 and Event ID: 8 on TechNet. They say it doesn't exist. Growing
frustrated!

Note that I receive no error messages at all.

Hope we can get a solution to this problem.

ChrisH,

Does the installed antivirus have a script blocking component ?
If yes, temporarily disable it prior to accessing Windows Update.

Which version of Windows are you running ?
You can check for error messages in the WindowsUpdate.log (V5 & V6)
or the Windows Update.log (V4) that is located in the WINDOWS directory.
The log will open in Notepad and the most recent entries are located at
the bottom of the log.
Post the last 20 or so lines from the log back with your response if an
error code exists.

Here's mine. I am having connecting. It keeps saying trying to connect but
it doesn't. Windows XP SP2 all updates (I think). Oh and it then freezes.

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP1 ver 5.1.

I should mention that I had to repair the OS. Before the repair, update
worked. All other features are working fine.

I forgot to mention that I shut down all virus/spyware software before trying
update.
