What about the ones I told you about?
Did you try my suggestion of searching for files which *contain*
those numbers or were you just searching for filenames which
have those numbers as part of their name? I already told you
that I didn't find the latter.
BTW those three update numbers that you are giving are all
different cumulative updates to IE. FYI you can only use a
cumulative update which supersedes the level of maintenance
that you already have.
<title>MS04-004 : Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894)</title>
<title>MS03-048 : Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (824145)</title>
<TITLE>MS03-040 : Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (828750)</TITLE>
None of them is the latest. (The last one doesn't even seem
to apply to XPsp1 strangely.)
Use the TechNet Security Bulletin Search tool to find the latest
for your OS and its level of maintenance.

What updates were you being offered then?

When you have trouble indicated by error messages please transcribe
your error messages exactly. I suspect that you are misinterpreting
a message which is telling you (in a very obtuse way) that you already
have a version of the modules that you are trying to install which equals
or supersedes the version that the update would install. Unfortunately
the error message is written only to indicate that the install was not done
and instead of saying that the wording is given to try to provide extra
explanation to the (assumed) majority of the cases.

This tells us that you don't have XPsp2 installed yet.
I'm not sure how we tell if the SP1 came as result of
installing XPsp1 or IE6sp1 into XP. Since you told us
that you have XPsp1 I will assume the former.
In any case it also indicates that you have *no* maintenance on it.
The one update which is listed is this one:
<title>MS04-018 : Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express (823353)</title>
BTW Why aren't you installing XPsp2?
If you previously had XPsp2 installed and didn't remove it
cleanly that may be the cause of your symptoms. E.g. you
may have modules from it still installed which are preventing
the older modules from replacing them. In that case, you
could try uninstalling a previously installed cumulative update
(or XPsp1 itself) and reinstalling it in hopes that by doing so
a complete set of earlier versions of the modules could be
restored. Please make sure that this time there is no interfering
application (e.g. anti-virus) active or you could have the same
problem again at a different level.
To check that idea use the appropriate file manifest in the appropriate
TechNet Security Bulletin. E.g. compare the versions of the modules
listed there with the versions of the same modules that you have
installed. To predict which versions you would get by uninstalling
one it looks as if you could open the $NTUninstall... folder.
(E.g. search for a module name you are interested in,
use File, Open Containing Folder and then check the Properties
of each .dll that the folder contains.)
Tip: use the msinfo32 tool to find the versions that you have
E.g. for checking IE modules Run... (press Win-R and enter
msinfo32 /category IEFileVersions
I think the same sort of point is being made here with a specific case
and less explanation. You might want to look at it for more ideas:
<title>KB888162 - You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found -
The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located
in the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install
the MS04-038 security update</title>
Another approach that I would be less confident about would be to see
if your versions of those modules would not be regressed by the *latest*
cumulative update for IE. In that case installing it *might* clean up the
inconsistencies that you appear to have.
But I think the most important thing to do is find any diagnostics
from your install attempts. They should give you more specific clues
about your problem(s) than my speculations.

FileMon is freeware from SysInternals.
You could use it to check your assumption about
how log files are used during the update,
among other things.
