Update not Updated

I'm using XP Professional SP1, daily updated; I have set the Automatic
Update to check for new update every day.

Every morning I'm notified that there are 3 new update for IE6:
-KB832894
-KB824145
-KB828750

Every morning I click "Install".
Every morning it seems that the installation is completed without
errors. But every morning...:

....if I look the installed software, these fix are not listed.
....if I look the registry (as indicated in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319109), these fix are not listed.
....if I look in C:/WINDOWS/ there are no log files about these
updates.
....the next morning I'm notified again (and again, and again, and
again...) for the same updates.

I've also tried to dowload every single update from microsoft website,
but every version I download is wrong!!!:
-if I dowload the IE6 version, it tell me that I don't have IE6...
-if I dowload the IE6-SP1 version, it tell me that I don't have
IE6-SP1...

I don't know exactly the versione of IE6 is installed on my machine,
but the "About box" of IE6 says:
IE6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.04919-1003
Update Version:; SP1; Q823353;

I'm sure that my machine is not 64-bit o server (it's regular HP
notebook), and it seems to me that there are no other security update
version that I can download.

Do you have some suggestions?

Bye bye

I have an end user who is experiencing the same exact issue on his laptop,
with the same 3 updates.

I have noticed that when you click Install on the updates, they install very
quickly (like it's not installing anything at all) and then says complete.
The Event Viewer shows the updates installed successfully, but it still
prompts every morning to install them.

Any help would be great-

Sounds like an issue with the registration of those updates. Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;319109

No...I have already checked <http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319109>:

....if I look the installed software, these fix are not listed.
....if I look the registry (as indicated in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319109), these fix are not listed.

In that case use Search Companion to find *.log files which
contain the patch number (e.g. without the KB prefix).

When I do that I find
setupapi.log
and
WindowsUpdate.log

As I have already written:
....if I look in C:/WINDOWS/ there are no log files about these updates.

No more suggestions?

I would strongly suspect that you aren't using the right tool
to make sure that you can see all files or search in them.

Try using AU in its always prompt mode.
Then download and install one update at a time.

Try switching the account to the Administrator account
before each install. Also, take that same opportunity
to make sure that *everything* is shutdown first.

Use FileMon to find out what it is doing then
if you are still having trouble.

Good luck

I have a lot of update (*.log) file, more than 50; for example:

....
KB823182.log
....
KB839645.log
....
KB885250.log
....
KB889293-IE6SP1-20041111.235619.log
....
Q828026.log
....

But I don't have any file about 832894, 824145 or 828750

> Try using AU in its always prompt mode.

I have already tried... I have also downloaded the .exe update files,
but they doesn't install. Every kind of update is wrong!!! Updates for
IE6 tell me that I don't have IE6.
Updates for IE6-SP1 tell me that I don't have IE6-SP1.
The info in the "about box" of IE are:
-Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.0490919-1003
-Update Version:; SP1; Q823353

My "usual" account is an administrator account...
I have tried also to update from "Administrator User", but the result
is the same.

Can you explain me this point more detailed?

What about the ones I told you about?
Did you try my suggestion of searching for files which *contain*
those numbers or were you just searching for filenames which
have those numbers as part of their name? I already told you
that I didn't find the latter.

BTW those three update numbers that you are giving are all
different cumulative updates to IE. FYI you can only use a
cumulative update which supersedes the level of maintenance
that you already have.

<title>MS04-004 : Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894)</title>
<title>MS03-048 : Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (824145)</title>
<TITLE>MS03-040 : Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (828750)</TITLE>

None of them is the latest. (The last one doesn't even seem
to apply to XPsp1 strangely.)

Use the TechNet Security Bulletin Search tool to find the latest
for your OS and its level of maintenance.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

What updates were you being offered then?

When you have trouble indicated by error messages please transcribe
your error messages exactly. I suspect that you are misinterpreting
a message which is telling you (in a very obtuse way) that you already
have a version of the modules that you are trying to install which equals
or supersedes the version that the update would install. Unfortunately
the error message is written only to indicate that the install was not done
and instead of saying that the wording is given to try to provide extra
explanation to the (assumed) majority of the cases.

> The info in the "about box" of IE are:
> -Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.0490919-1003
> -Update Version:; SP1; Q823353

This tells us that you don't have XPsp2 installed yet.
I'm not sure how we tell if the SP1 came as result of
installing XPsp1 or IE6sp1 into XP. Since you told us
that you have XPsp1 I will assume the former.
In any case it also indicates that you have *no* maintenance on it.
The one update which is listed is this one:

<title>MS04-018 : Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express (823353)</title>

BTW Why aren't you installing XPsp2?

If you previously had XPsp2 installed and didn't remove it
cleanly that may be the cause of your symptoms. E.g. you
may have modules from it still installed which are preventing
the older modules from replacing them. In that case, you
could try uninstalling a previously installed cumulative update
(or XPsp1 itself) and reinstalling it in hopes that by doing so
a complete set of earlier versions of the modules could be
restored. Please make sure that this time there is no interfering
application (e.g. anti-virus) active or you could have the same
problem again at a different level.

To check that idea use the appropriate file manifest in the appropriate
TechNet Security Bulletin. E.g. compare the versions of the modules
listed there with the versions of the same modules that you have
installed. To predict which versions you would get by uninstalling
one it looks as if you could open the $NTUninstall... folder.
(E.g. search for a module name you are interested in,
use File, Open Containing Folder and then check the Properties
of each .dll that the folder contains.)

Tip: use the msinfo32 tool to find the versions that you have
E.g. for checking IE modules Run... (press Win-R and enter

msinfo32 /category IEFileVersions

I think the same sort of point is being made here with a specific case
and less explanation. You might want to look at it for more ideas:

<title>KB888162 - You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found -
The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located
in the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install
the MS04-038 security update</title>

Another approach that I would be less confident about would be to see
if your versions of those modules would not be regressed by the *latest*
cumulative update for IE. In that case installing it *might* clean up the
inconsistencies that you appear to have.

But I think the most important thing to do is find any diagnostics
from your install attempts. They should give you more specific clues
about your problem(s) than my speculations.

....
>> Use FileMon to find out what it is doing then

FileMon is freeware from SysInternals.
You could use it to check your assumption about
how log files are used during the update,
among other things.

IMHO, if its name is *automatic* update, it MUST work properly
automatically. If every morning it tell me that there are these 3
update that must be installed (and they doesn't install), there is
something wrong ...and I'm using a *new* computer with a *recent*
Operating System installation (no virus, no install<->uninstall
software, no games, no freeware/sharware, nothing of "strange", ...)

With q828750.exe file, the message is exactly:
"This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 to be installed"
or
"This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 to be
installed"

I know...

I'm sure that I'm using XP-SP1.

I'm using some particular industrial-sw that doesn't work properly in
XP-SP2.
