Update not working on my computer

The problem is when I click on Microsoft Update, then Express Install (or
Custom) I get an "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display
the page you are trying to view..." with an Error number 0x80072EFD. I've run
through all the self-help option to no avail. The problem I have found while
running "notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" is that there is no
file associated with this command. All that happens is that a blank Notepad
doc pops up. Hoping that this is the problem and that I can get this file.
Help!

Jeff,

You're referring to the steps laid out here ? :

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message
when you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update
Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

The HOSTS file is located in WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Then use either My Computer, or Windows Explorer and navigate to the
HOSTS file. It's possible that the command was not copied correctly.

Hi Jeff,

The following Local Services listed in Services must be set as follows:
Automatic Updates Startup Type is set to Automatic.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service Startup Type is set to Manual.
Event Log Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Right-click Start and click on Explore. Go to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. At the top, click View and click Details, in order to view that folder in Details View. In the Right Window, check the status of the files. Any file that is marked as Damaged, highlight it and delete it.

At this time, you might as well go to your \Temp Folders delete all files and sub-folders not with the current date and files not in use.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Go to Start and My Computer. Right-click on the Hard Drive containing the operating system. Click Properties then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, check Check Now. Check both choices. Click Start and then click Yes. Reboot and let Check Disk run.

On the reboot, then you go to Windows Update, asks to install ActiveX Controls, you must allow it. Also, you must be using Internet Explorer Browser.

You don't mention your operating system.

You're going to have to be a little more specific on the \Temp folders. Is
that Windows\Temp? I'm not sure what files and folders to delete without
causing irrepairable damage. How do I know if a file is in use? Where should
today's date be, Under Accessed, Modified, etc.? Should I delete the Cookies,
History & Temporary Internet Files folders? I also have folder called
_ISTMP1.DIR, can it be safely deleted?

Hi Jeff,

C:\Windows\Temp all its sub-folders and files. Delete all files, that don't have the current date.
C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Local Settings\Temp all its sub-folders and files. Files in use, can't be deleted.
Empty your Temporary Internet Files using Internet Options. Do not delete your Cookies, unless you want to. It is not necessary at this point. If you do, delete the Cookies, make sure your passwords are recorded somewhere.

_ISTMP1.DIR can be deleted if in your \Temp folders. If not, leave it at this time.

Unfortunately, after doing all that it still does the same thing. I even did
a system restore back to when I was pretty sure it was working and it still
gave me the same fault. I am at a loss, looks like its time to buy a new
computer! I'm running XP by the way. Thanks for the help, if you can think of
anything else I'll be glad to try it.

Hi Jeff,

Try this before a new Computer.

Procedure to Reinstall Windows XP!

If you want to save any files, make a backup of those files off the Hard Drive and proceed.

0. - Turn off the printer.
1. - Go into Computer Bios and Set Defaults and Exit, if you know how.
Make sure the Boot Order is set to Boot to CD-Rom Drive First.
2. - Insert Windows XP CD into CD-Rom Drive.
3. - Reboot the computer.

Note: If Windows XP is installed, working okay, you will need to Press a key to boot from the Windows XP CD.
If you are using an Upgrade CD, and the computer boots directly from the CD, you will need to furnish a qualifying previous version of a Windows operating system's Installation CD, in order to install Windows XP from an Upgrade CD.

4. - Welcome to Setup.
5. - Reinstall XP - Press Enter
6. - F8 - I Agree
7. - Esc: Don't Repair
8. - Select Partition to Install Windows XP on.
Use UP and DOWN ARROW Keys to Highlight Partition.
9. - Press Enter.
10. - Press C to Continue.
11. - Highlight the Action You Want To Take.
Type of Format you want to perform.
12. - I selected Format The Partition using the Fat File System.
13. - Then Press Enter to Continue
14. - Warning Message
15. - Press F
16. - To Continue To Format Partition with the FAT32 File System.
17. - Press Enter.
18. - Now it formats.
19. - After Formatting It Checks The Drive.
20. - Then Copies files to partition.
21. - Now it Reboots to Windows XP. Don't press a key to boot to CD.
22. - And now it installs Windows XP.
23. - You need to be here now.
24. - Starts at 39 Minutes to Complete.
25. - At 33 minutes, you need to set Time and Time Zone.
26. - And Enter The Product Key.
27. - At 29 minutes, you need to pick the Network.
28. - Now wait for Reboot and you are done.
