update notification is not that noticable in Windows 2000

I am wondering if there is anyway to increase the frequency of
displaying the update notification on the taskbar in Windows 2000.

I found that the message (updates are available for your computer, click
here to install these updates) only pop up once. It will disappear
itself after maybe 5-7 seconds and it will not come back afterward(only
leave the small update icon there). If users are not paying attention on
the taskbar or away from the desk, they might not aware that there is
update available.

Be thankful that you at least still see the icon.
FWIW in XP Pro an even worse situation would occur
due to hiding of "inactive" icons in the notification area.
AU is one of the few icons I customize to be Always show

But isn't having the icon there enough of a clue that updates are available?
AFAIK if no updates are available the icon won't be there at all.
(E.g. wuauclt.exe exits.)
