How can I disable the update notification in Windows Live Messenger 2008
once and for all?

Hey,

Well that's easy, by downloading and using 2009.

Okay, I won't leave you stuck there. There are a few ways, none of which would be
"supported" (by Microsoft), but before getting to those, it would be helpful to know which
part of the update notification is bothering you. In other words, is it just the yellow bar
in the contact list which is bothering you or the toast notifying you that there is an update
available?

Actually both. First I had a look what the update comprehends. I noticed a
lot of unwanted trash (unrelated to Messenger?) and the space it would take
up. Added to that I read user messages reporting problems, so I decided not
to update... for the time being.
Then there's the option to get rid of the notification, for 2 weeks I
believe, but after that the buggering starts all over again.

Hi,

Oh right, I was thinking of the behavior on 8.5 which is a little less annoying than that.
You've just given me some ideas though that would be interesting to try relating to removing
these, let me test my ideas though first before mentioning them here.

Can't grasp that ©MS have made switching off the notification that
complicated...
Regarding a possible update: I understand it is impossible or at least
problematic to undo the update?

Thanks for your efforts.

Hi,

Nothing more problematic then uninstalling the current version and installing the old one.
I've not seen a single real problem with that process, beyond the standard Windows Installer
problems that happen regardless what you're doing.
