I have about 10 updates that won't install.....all have been downloaded
successfully...most are Office 2003. I have XP Pro, and am on a Univ Network.

If you are updating through Microsoft Update, as opposed to Windows Update,
the Office updates will fail..

Open Microsoft Update and gange settings to remove Microsoft Update and
replace with the older Windows Update.. you will then be able to access
Office Update again, and all should be well..

I disabled Microsoft Update, then went to windows update and it didn't show
the need of an office 2003 update. So I went to the office website and tried
to update it that way and the update still failed. Up until this last update
I had been using Microsoft update with no problems for all my microsoft
software and hardware.

Any more suggestions?

Sometimes the system says that an install has failed but in fact it has
suceeded. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919029 and go to the section
entitled !"How to determine whether the update is installed".

I have the right file version so the update must have installed but the
Microsoft update does not think it is installed. i have no idea why this
might be.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards, James

Those failures are actually caused by the Office Source Engine service being disabled or corrupted. Check services.msc to see if the service is running. If not, start it. If it won't start or that doesn't fix the problem you will need to repair your Office installation through Add/Remove Programs using the original installation CD.
