You accomplish the same thing then, in your scenario, by waiting anyway.
Don't want all the little patches between service packs - don't get them (at
your own risk.) ;-)
Essentially Turn off Automatic Updates if you don't want to bother using it
or be bothered by what it might do. It's not like you have any need to look
at the list of installed updates the majority of the time, and if an update
comes along that wraps all the prior updates in one big one and clears out
your installed updates list and replaces it with itself - if you didn't
look, you'd never had known. ;-)
