As several people have reported here and elsewhere, that update fails for me
on two different systems. One system had the Microsoft Live Safety beta
registry cleaner run on it last week (prior to this update), the other did
*not* have the Microsoft Live Safety beta registry cleaner run on it. So it
appears that the problem may not be related to that registry cleaner.
Just tried it again after clearing all temp files.
Download appears to work cleanly. Monitoring the install shows that it goes
past Initializing into "Installing..." where the progress bar goes all the
way to the right and then it shows "Failed!".
Excerpt from %windir%.windowsupdate.log:

updates detected (etc... there we go again)No useful information
at »support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602 .
Enabled logging as specified at »support.microsoft.com/kb/223300/ and ran
the update again. Same error, same windowsupdate.log error, but no
msixxxxx.log file was created!

Follow-up:
Tried to follow Microsoft's tricks to repair Office update to get this to
work. None worked.
Also:
Tried Office Setup Detect and Repair. It failed.
Tried to run Setup from the Office 2003 CD, Detect and Repair option. It
crashed during "Validating install", caught by DrWatson "Send to
Microsoft..."
Tried to run Setup from the Office 2003 CD, Reinstall option. It crashed
during "Validating install", caught by DrWatson "Send to Microsoft..."

Looks like this automatic patch not only failed to install, but actually
caused irreparable damage.

This is very likely going to get much worse - get a backup of all your
personal documents, music, pics etc off the PC while you still can.

I don't suppose you have a backup image of the C Drive pre the beta
install?

Assuming you do not, otherwise you would have got out of this by now,
you can try to uninstall this Beta software and use a restore point to
undo the damage it possibly caused.....good luck with that!

I am sorry if I appear negative but Beta Software is a very bad idea
on a PC that you cannot afford to wipe and re-install, weather it is
from Microsoft or Acme Computer Co "Beta" means this software may
seriously bugger up your PC use it at your own risk.

"Microsoft Live Safety Beta registry cleaner", you have got to be
kidding ffs! what possessed you to use a beta reg cleaner of all
things? Does it have a built in backup / revert most proper ones do.

Try uninstalling and reverting with a restore point to pre beta if you
can, and keep your fingers crossed.

Problem fixed (at least apparently). The update worked after fixing the
registry. To avoid doing it manually here is how I did it:

Using Windows Explorer go to C:\Documents and Settings\(user
name)\Application Data\Windows Live Safety Center\BackUp and double-click
the .reg file created by the Microsoft Safety registry cleanup.

Notes: For sanity, I scanned the content of that .reg file to check it would
not revert something else to an unwanted state. I found no reference to the
installation CD (even though I had installed from CD) in any key or value.
The only Office sourcepath for which there were entries pointed to a long
gone temp directory. Also, there *are* some apparently deliberately
mislabeled registry entries that seem to contain the real keys required by
Office Update to work. The labeling is so obfuscated that the other
Microsofties who did the registry cleaner obviously did not realize what
they were for.

Once more at Microsoft the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is
doing. I think the problems Microsoft is having with the EU about not
providing usable or coherent OS documentation to third parties is that such
a coherent documentation simply doesn't exist even at Microsoft. Who's got
time to read through millions of pages of tech notes?
