Update page freezes

Update used to work and now doesn't.
When I invoke it, it usally freezes while checking the activeX. the
progress bar at the bottom is at the maximum extent.
but sometime gets past that and freezes after selecting Express.
One time it got to wishing to install .net 3 and froze after I said to
install it.

I am using a new netbook, asus, purchased in December '08, it has a harddrive.
it has for an OS - XP Home SP3. For protection, it has Norton Internet
Security 2009.

Suggestions?

Good point. I've now checked all the event logs (app, system, secuity, ie,
msfwsvc), and only the application log records errors. Two are recorded
for each freeze case. The abbreviated messages are below.

I don't have much in the way of add on toolbars (no google toolbar, nor
yahoo) installed. I am only running the menu toolbar and status bar.
