Update patch + Media Player 9 redirect error

I updated the "update" program and all was well. I added
the optional Media Player 9 update and after rebooting as
directed, could no longer access Windows Update. Any
attempt seems to hang. Closer observation revealed a
cycling message at the bottom that seemed to be the re-
direct to update followed by something else repeated
indefinitely. Restoring to before the Media Player
upgrade solved the problem. I don't need a new media
player, but I'm as usual extremely frustrated with how
hard it is simply to tell someone about the error. I'm
not going to get a passport just to do that.

Anyway, I'm using a Compaq TC1000 Tablet with XP Tablet
Edition. Things work fine without Media player 9, but
someone out there may care that it crashes update in some
cases. 512 Memory, plenty of HD, up to date HP/Compaq and
MS critical patches.
