Update Phishing?

I recently received (around 5/18) a message on my XP machine, telling me that
because of user feedback, a solution had been found to an XP problem. the
problem, the message stated, was due to improper shut down of programs. I
believed the message was legit, followed instructions, and restarted my
machine. the only peculiarity i notice now: when i log on, i am told my
password will expire soon, and asked to change it--despite the fact that the
password policy for my account on windows server is set to never expire. has
anyone experience this or have any ideas?

i didn't receive an email--i wouldn't have trusted that. it was some kind of
pop-up on my client machine--so i have nothing to show.

Then there nothing anyone can do. You wouldn't trust email but you were still gullible
enough to fall for another Social Engineering attaempt to exploit your security.

Did you install any software ?

What were the "instructions" ?

Thanks for your help, David, but I need someone who knows something about
this matter, someone who is "can do," not someone who tells me "there nothing
anyone can do!"

There is nothing anyone "can do" because you have not provided sustentative information and
you waited from 5/18 till 6/1 to ask questions. Plus you didn't even answer my questions.

Unless you post details of the instructions you followed no one can help,
other than making caustic comments.

Take a hike... Your question is off-topic anyway.
This is "microsoft.public.windowsupdate" in case you didn't notice.

It's everyone's fault that you didn't disable Windows Messenger Service.
Simply activating XP's firewall would have prevented your problems.
