update problem - unknown error code

I originally posted this in the 'general' section.

Update no longer works. Coincidental with this failure was the installation
of a version of Atiy Labs 'Ghostbusters' spyware. I am suspicious of this
because when I tried to uninstall it it screwed up my ability to get onto the
internet (altho broadband connection was still functional, Explorer refused
to hook up to any sites).

The error code I get is 0x8007041D, which the microsoft site does not
recognise.

Tried turning off antivirus and firewalls, to no avail.

Any advice appreciated

Have you tried a system restore, prior to the installation of Ghostbusters?
Also, make sure your BITS are started together with dependencies. See
message from Milo above this thread about registering dlls.

I just replied to another poster today whose log was showing this code.

Since you are using the web interface to newsgroups you can use
its search tool to find it. Notice that the results list shows you the date
of the latest message in the thread which contains (all) your search terms.

Please use the information from my reply there for more ideas for your
incident. Post here with more details for your incident or any questions
you may have about my reply.

Note also that you can find other helpful posts using the web interface's
search tool. Unfortunately the voting mechanisms are not well used yet
and we can't vote for our own posts but what you can exploit usefully
in order to find threads where you are more likely to find helpful posts
is to add either MSFT or MVP to your search terms.
