Windows update is not working correctly. This is a brand new laptop, and so I
am trying to run Windows Update. After installing the ActiveX control, I am
brought to a screen allowing me to select between Express and Custom update
downloading. For either I select, I arrive an an error page saying "The
website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying
to view. [Error number: 0x800A01AE]". What should I do. I have restarted the
machine, and tryed again all to no avail.

Thanks

Same Problem here, I think it is a site problem.

Actually, I was able to fix it by doing this:

I have the same problem. I have 2 systems here with XP on them and one has no
problem getting updates and the other gets the progress bar for about 20
minutes then the "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display
the page you are trying to view. [Error number: 0x800A01AE]" message.

I tried what helped you but didn't work for me.

I fixed it by disconnecting my router and plugging straight into the cable
modem and everything works fine now.
