Update process has quit working

Overnite my system has stopped accepting the update process. It reflects
that the detection program needs installing ... which was done many months
ago ... and then shows it as downloading ... but never an install process.
Basically, i am in a loop and cannot seem to get anything to work with this
process. I suspect it 'may' have to do with a Spybot clean process I did
yesterday; but don't know how to now get it to come out of the loop.

Not sure what you mean by "dectection program", so that's a bit of concern.

FIRST:
If you have Windows XP, these are suggested steps to clean up after a failed Windows Update attempt.

Housekeeping and cleanup steps:
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32 (or C:\WINNT\System32 )

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure you do the right one.

(to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update)
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

SECOND:
Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".)
If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note (the red X), and see some info.

THIRD:
Other suggestion: In Internet Explorer browser > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Click "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to *clear* the selection.

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://update.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes.

The Spybot search process....

Did what you suggested; but seems to have not changed anything. Loop is
still there. Get this message, the one with the red "X" ... Files required
to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your
computer
..... and it goes thru the process all over again ... even after I click on
the install for the update program to be installed. Quickly a 100% indicator
shows ... but again, no installation process (if there should be one that is).

It is V6.

The part where you had me check the box for "Require server verification ...
etc.", I had to reverse in order to get the next 3 commands you wanted me to
add. Turned it off ... and then got it to accept the additions ... and then
clicked the box again.

But ... as above, after reboot, another attempt ... and no change.

One other comment....... there is no numeric reference provided for this loop
problem ... by Microsoft. I point this out because on the self help trouble
shooting section are some referenced error messages ... of numeric titles.

Nothing like that there

I got rid of spybot a few months back as it interfered with installing and
reinstalling programs. The overall update process is a continuing nightmare
that Windows will not effectively address.

1 very quick note.
In Internet Explorer browser > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
"Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" <<---- needs to be un-checked

1. In Internet Explorer> Tools, click Internet Options, and then click Languages....
If this box is empty, add at least one language -- your usual national language.
If you happen to have 2 or more, move English up on this list.

2. Disable your Discussion Bar in Internet Explorer: Click View. Point to Explorer Bar.
Click Discuss to *remove the check mark* and disable ( clear ) this .

3. I. E. Tools >Internet Options > Advanced Tab > (scroll down thru the list)
and under Security :
Clear (un-check) the check box next to "Check for server certificate revocation" . ( *OFF* )

Apply changes to I.E. & exit out of it.

Try Windows / Microsoft Updates again.

In case you still have an "error exception", you really need to look at your update log:
Suggest you review the windows update log file and see what it contains for the last session.
Use Notepad or Wordpad and take a look at (usually C:\WINNT or \Windows )
%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Scan down to the bottom. Review contents.
You need to look for entries marked "Error" such as 0x......... (where ....... are numbers)

See KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093
