update puzzle

A friend with Win XP SP2 desktop is unable to update Windows. (Until
recently he has done so without problem but stared getting an error - unable
to connect to this site 0x80072EE7)
I am unable to establish from friend what may have happened just prior to
this error appearing.
Apparently the problem goes back maybe 2 months.
In desperation he took his PC to PC World (UK)
PC World connected to Windows Update (evidently without problem) & updated
his PC. - cost him £29.99 - (gulp).

When he returned home & tried to use Windows Update Site he got an - unable
to connect - error - 0x80072EE7, so he took his PC back to PC World, who
simply plugged in and connected successfully to Windows Update Site (before
his very eyes).
When he returned home and tried to use Windows Update Site he got the same -
unable to connect - error 0x80072EE7.
We are working our way through the online help we can find (unsuccessfully
so far) to try to overcome this 'can't connect' problem, but, we are puzzled
why PC World connect his PC to this site without problem, twice, yet when he
returns home this becomes impossible.
They used the link from above his 'Start' button, so it doesn't appear they
were using a different site.

We can't see a logical explanation, so, can anyone offer one please?

His System Restore is unable to restore to an earlier date also, which is an
issue we also need to address.

Possible miscreants include a third-party firewall, an "internet
accelerator", connecting via a proxy, and/or one or more anti-spyware
applications.

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message
when you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update
Web site

0x80072EE7 means there's a connectivity issue. Basically, the server's
name could not be resolved.

The PC in question was able to connect to the update servers because of
the connection it was at PC World.
So, how is their setup different from your friend's setup ?

Is their a home network involved and is it wired or wireless, what
firewall is the system using, is there any antivirus/popup/cookie
blocking software installed that may be causing the connectivity issue,
etc. ?

Thanks for quick reply Mowgreen,

We had spotted KB836941 amongst other 'stuff' but hadn't worked thro' that
yet (maybe it would have been the best place to start - but we are not
expert).

There is no network, just the one PC.

Its a wireless setup, using Norton Internet Security product (Firewall /
anti virus etc) no other popup or cookie blocking software installed.

The PC's software 'at home' is the same as the PC's software 'at PC World' -
this is what is puzzling us. (repeat - we're not expert)

There is obviously a difference somewhere but we can't think where - same
PC, same software, connects to Windows Update at PC World, doesn't connect
at home.

We've tried in Safe Mode - we've tried with Norton turned off - we've
checked Hosts File for any reference to Windows Update site - to no avail
so far, but we know there are other things to try. We can't use System
Restore, and anyway, it's too long since now since this problem manifested
itself.

I think the 'Guided Help' may be the next thing for us to try.

Just a thought - You mentioned a Wireless Router, in the security tab, make sure you
aren't blocking AcitveX.

A wireless setup without a network ? Not possible, unless the system is
accessing a nearby wireless network.
2 things to check:

1) The wireless routers settings
There's most likely a hardware firewall included with the wireless
router. Ensure it's not blocking scripting [ActiveX] for Trusted Sites.
Also, the MTU may have to be changed. Leave that for last as I suspect .....

2) NIS
Norton Internet Security is the most likely cuplprit. PC World knows how
to **completely and totally disable** everything connected with NIS.
That includes it's native firewall, functions of the antivirus, and
*all* related Services.
I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that NIS was not completely and
totally disabled when the friend's system was brought 'home'.

Either consult NIS' Help file or Symantec's web site to learn how to do
the above.

*Disconnect* the system from the internet prior to disabling NIS.
*** Remember to Enable the native XP firewall before you connect the
system to the internet ***

Then see if the system can access the update servers.

To mitigate any future issues with updating that can be caused by the
antivirus included with NIS, please read this:

Sorry, a misuse of words on my part. What I should have put is ' wireless
internet connection' not 'wireless setup'.

Its holiday time here in the UK and friend is off on holiday now, but when
he returns we will follow thro' your help & guidance below.
