For weeks now my Vista PC has been downloading and then trying, but
failing,to install an excel update.

The error message is meaningless as the error code doesnt match any you can
search for.

The full text of the error is shown below. What do i do now?

Paul
----------------------------
Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB933666)

Installation date: ‎15/‎06/‎2007 00:16

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 779

Update type: Important

A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office Excel 2003 that could
allow remote code execution. This update resolves that vulnerability. This
update also includes changes that enable blocking of specific file formats in
Excel 2003.

One possible cause is that the temporary folder for Windows Update contains
corrupted files.

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. We can clean up the
temporary folder for Windows Update using the following steps:

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ

If the issue is not resolved, please try the
following steps.

Step 3: Rename CatRoot2 folder

1. Close all the open windows.

2. Click Start, click Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

3. Locate and open the System32 folder.

4. Find the CatRoot2 folder, right-click on it, and select RENAME. Change
the name to CR2OLD.

5. Make sure you press Enter after typing in the new name, so the changes
are executed.

Finally, if none of the above helps, Uninstall/Reinstall the application.

I too am getting Code 779 on the Excel 2003 KB940602 fix on Vista buiness.

This is a clean PC, professionally setup. Only the usual services are
running, clean boot - and it fails.

Please fix the update so it installs properly and notify me when fixed.

Thank you.
