An Update repeatedly reinstalls.

After having downloaded Update KB931784 it immediately reappears in the
taskbar for installation, as if it hadn't just been done. The same update
notification appears in the taskbar within seconds of installation, again and
again. Cancelling the taskbar installation panel has no effect. I even
tried reinstalling the update several times as it popped up. Each
installation is recorded in the History Page. Help is needed. Thanks.

Assuming you're on Windows XP SP2:

Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-a9f1eae19b51

*Save* the file to a folder your harddisk (let me call it "C:\Downloads"),
do *not* execute it from within your browser.

Afterwards type the following under "Run" in the Start menu:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

The parameter "/o" (o like overwriteOEM) should do the trick for you.
Note the blank between the last quote sign and the parameter /o!
</selfquote>

Bye,
Freudi

Hi Freudi: Thank you for the helpful, detailed answer to my question.
Actually I had already installed this update as soon as I saw it in the
taskbar showing that it was available as an Automatic Update. The problem was
(is) that immediately another update appears which turns out to be a repeat
of that first one. (This has never happened to be before.) I had repeatedly
installed this same update three times before I noted that it was that same
update, KB931784. My Update History now shows four successful installations
of this same update. I've got to make this stop, hopefully with your help.
Thanks again, Breadstick

Have you (re)installed 931784 *exactly* as Freudi outlined?

Hi Freudi, I find this hard to believe myself, but here is
what has happened. Just after reading Pa Bear's
message verifying your instructions about solving
my problem, an "Automatic Update Installation"
panel popped up and automatically installed
KB931784 and then immediately restarted my PC. In
the past I have always had to install the
downloaded updates whenever they appeared on the
screen. Actually I have always wondered why, since
my option was checked for 11:00 a.m. daily. Anyway
it seems to be working properly now. I certainly
appreciate your attention and help.

Hi Pa Bear, Thanks a lot for your interest in my posted question to Freudi.
FYI please read my reply to him. I really appreciate the help from both of
you.
