Try closing all unnecessary apps running in background. These would include
but aren't limited to anti-virus app, firewall (Be Careful!), IE and mail
client windows, instant messengers.

I actually solved this problem by renaming the winlogon.exe in system32 and
the dllcache to winlogon.sav when the installer put up the message that it
failed to copy winlogon.exe and then I clicked retry and the installer
completed successfully. All my updates after this one now work properly.

You know I never really thought to try to rename it since I figured that the
file would be open since the WinLogon task was running, but when I did the
rename when the error message was displayed and clicked retry for some
reason it succeeded. I'm not exactly sure why it worked. That always makes
me feel uneasy.
