Update runs even though I've told it not to?

I've disabled Windows Update simply because I don't have any confidence that
it's not transmitting personal information back to Redmond.

Can anyone tell me why CTRL-ALT-DEL reveals the process running in the
background?

I've told it no.............does no mean yes or something?

Okay, that's up to you....but no, WU isn't transmitting personal information
to Bill Gates, to the Pope, or to the tomb of Nikita Kruschev. :-)

Did you stop and disable the autoupdate service?

Yes, and double clicking on the red shield in my taskbar entitled "Windows
Security Alerts" confirms that Automatic Updates is turned off.

CTRL-ALT-DEL reveals that wuaclt.exe is running and according to

http://www.liutilities.com/products/...ibrary/wuaclt/

this is the Microsoft Windows XP AutoUpdater doing it's thing.

I can't believe I'm the first person to spot this?

If you stopped and disabled the service itself, you shouldn't see that, I
think.
Regardless, sounds like you're not doing autoupdate even if this service is
running. Just to be on the safe side, though, have you run full scans with
the latest version of Spybot & AdAware to make sure?
