Yesterday I ran WU from the start menu. It did that I needed to update the
controls. I did that and did the required restart. When I ran WU again it
said that I needed 18 Critical updates. All 18 were already in the
add/remove programs list and in the Windows folder. these are all old
updates. Now Automatic Updates is telling me that I need these updates
everytime I boot. Should I reinstall all these updates or is there another
fix?

How to troubleshoot Windows Update or Microsoft Update when you are
repeatedly offered an update:

Thanks for the link.

When I checked update history, the only things listed were:

Windows XP Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 Tuesday, February 07, 2006
Windows Update
Windows XP Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and
WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) Tuesday, February 07, 2006 Windows Update

I then downloaded and installed those 18 Critical Updates. I rebooted and
went back and WU said that I need 15 more CUs. I installed those and then WU
said that I needed KB823353. I installed that and rebooted and it still said
that I needed it even though it was listed twice in update history. I have
hidden it at WU and have AU set to ignore it.

Do you know what could have wiped out my update history?

See this KB article:

A dialog box with no text appears if you reply to a news message in Outlook
Express 6 Service Pack 1 (You may ignore the title)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555398

Also see this post of mine in a recent newsgroup discussion:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...7f3b0ed2?hl=en

For reasons yet to be determined or resolved (apparently), Windows Update
offers OE updates in the wrong order to Win2K and WinXP SP1 users. Here's
the fix:

1. Uninstall 'Windows XP Hotfix - KB897715' via Add/Remove Programs and
reboot. (If you don't find any reference whatsoever to 897715 in Add/Remove
Programs, post back.)

2a. Assuming MSOE.DLL is now v6.00.2800.1409 or earlier (i.e.,
v6.00.2800.1123 or v6.00.2800.1106), install (KB)823353 manually using the
file downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2b. Optional: Reboot and install KB887797 via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...6-a1a3da675baf

3. Reboot and (re)install (KB)897715 manually using the file downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-28502b3d2518

4. Now check in at Windows Update and install WinXP SP2 & reboot.

5. Return to Windows Update and install any other critical or recommended
updates offered.

In the not-too-distant future, you will have to have SP2 installed to get
/any/ security updates.
