Update search not working - never concludes

I am using Windows XP Pro SP2, IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519.

Same thing happens both for Microsoft Update and Windows Update, for
whichever type of search: The search seems to start (the green dashes on the
progress bar start walking) - and then never stops, never concludes with any
updates to download.

Any ideas how come? Solution?

In WindowsUpdate.log I find the following entries reoccurring (mark the last
line):

This 'failing to call back to search call' is probably what the log can tell
about our neverending search.

(I am looking through similar entries in this discussion group, but this
takes quite some time - I am thankful if someone who has seen this before
will put me on the track...)
