Update Service Keeps Coming Back!

I have repeatedly set the Update service to stop updating automatically. I
must be doing something wrong, because no matter how many times I do this,
the next time I log on I get a message telling me that updates have been
downloaded and when I check the update service, the settings have gone back
to "download and notify".

What am I doing wrong?

We have no idea of many things necessary to answer your question from your
posting.

- Operating system? (Version/flavor as well.)
- Service pack level (if applicable)?
- What you *did* to 'set the Update service to stop updating automatically'?
- What rights you have on said system?
- If this system happens to be managed by anyone else (personal or business
machine)?
- If there are any other users on this machine?
