you're right XP SP2 is horrible junk!
recovery point is hit and miss as well. I did set a recovery point before installing SP2 but it's not there now when I need it! I'm going to f-disk and when i come back I'll be in linux Dar. I'm glad MS got it right for someone!
I've got a virually dead machine thanks to SP2 and since 8am this morning I've been posting to all the sites I've used for years to try and get solutions to the SP2 problems. I've never experienced anything like e-mail responses I've got so far,(54 people have e-mailed since 8:30 saying they've experienced the same or similar problems), I'm usualy lucky to get ONE response to a windows tech problem! I don't think the issue is whether you or me or any individual does a user survey, surely it's down to MS to ensure that they're releasing something that won't cause catastrophies on average user machines? Glad you're one of the lucky ones, Dar. I agree with you. After installing this, I can no longer use wireless and my
system is SO SLOW. I am tempted to uninstall this SP2, but I wish that Microsoft would fix the problem. Microsoft, if you are out there, HELP US! There already were Beta versions of SP-2 available (RC-1 & RC-2)
available to everyone for several months before the final release of SP-2. Anyone that had concerns about their particular system could have tried them However what would you expect? The result would possibly be similar. Such testing is often better for businesses since they often have several machines and can adequately test on a small sampling and evaluate the affect if it was installed on all their systems. No one said SP-2 is "required", other than you that is. If you do not want to install SP-2 or want to wait, that is your choice. There is even a tool to help if you still want other Critical Updates through Automatic Update: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2aumng.mspx -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/ "jbelk" <> wrote in message news:317901c4a3ff$d3a6f9e0$... > Some of your points I will agree with but with others I > would choose to disagree. The installation works most of the time. It happens but not much that "PCs are severely stressed..." However it is normal and expected for the computer to be slower for about three days, the time it takes the prefetch file to rebuild. Taking drastic action before then is pointless. > > The Installation takes if it works at all, 2 to 3 hours, with > download, > verification and installation. This is with a fast ADSL-connection. All recent versions of Norton are prcognized. However Norton needs to make an update available before the status can be monitored. That is the responsibility of the AV manufacturer if they decide to let Windows monitor their status. .. Any preinstalled > Firewall will be inactivated and replaced by the MS-builtin > firewall. Do you mean Network Installation? Or what is "single safety updates for the moment, with the choice manualinstallation" Nothing can guarantee a flawless installation, but research and preparation can go a long way: http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/xpsp2.htm http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/ |

If you were to apply your thinking to computing in general, we would never have made it past running DOS 2.11 on an 8086 processor.. look at how many people try to load XP on a machine that was essentially designed for Win 95, but just happened to be sold with Win 98.. are you telling us that it is not the responsibility of the computer user to research whether or not the old computer can handle XP?.. Microsoft have no control over what people try to do with the Windows product line.. it is their job to produce software/hardware and our job to learn how to use it.. In reply to Mike H. I would like to point out that I received SP2 as an
automatic update which downloded and installed without my intervention or providing any advice. I agreed to this download and install contract with Microsoft because I wanted to receive critical updates for my computer which I need for when I work from home. I followed ALL onscreen instructions as provided but the point is that that the product malfunctioned very badly. Your argument that all computer users need to be fully experienced in every aspect of operating system technology is as completely spurious as suggesting that every car driver needs to be a fully qualified mechanic. Every car driver needs to be qualfied in how to drive a car not how to build and repair it. I didn't go to a 'back-street garage' to service my computer I went to the manufacturer - Microsoft - who gave me back a piece of junk. I wouldn't accept that from a car manufacturer and I don't see why I should accept it from a software manufacturer. If you have the time and interest to invest in operating system software engineering then good luck to you, but don't expect everyone else to share your interests or have the same priorities in life.
