The poor Information on update SP2 is a major desaster for most systems,
the support ist redicoulous. Non MS-firewalls block the installation!
The installation if it works at all causes serious problems even in
well operated and serviced PC-systems. The PC-ressources of
Home-PCs are severely stressed and at the limit of ressources after
installing the new SP2 update. The machine becomes extremely slow!

The Installation takes if it works at all, 2 to 3 hours, with download,
verification and installation. This is with a fast ADSL-connection.

The widely used Norton antyvirus software ist not recognised, instead
MS wants to sell now their own AntiVirus-Products. Any preinstalled
Firewall will be inactivated and replaced by the MS-builtin firewall.

There is no description, that the XP-operating-system ist severely
changed with new and for many users absolutely unnecessary junk.
In my case die LAN-WEB-connection was destroyed, the PC-IP-Adress
was eliminated, no simple help or fix was awailable. I could not
get the web-connection to work again.

Most desastrous! SP2 can not be uninstalled! in contrast to the
support-suggestions! There is no support and no info on this
serious malfunction.

The only function that was successful, was the XP system recovery function.
Make sure, you set XP-recovery piont before using SP2 update!

Better don't try to install PC2, this is piece of software junk, use instead
the single safety updates for the moment, with the choice manual
installation, do not use quick installation.

How big was your user sample?

From my sample of one I must conclude that SP2 is excellent. That's
because it only took 20 minutes and I had no problems at all.

you're right XP SP2 is horrible junk!

recovery point is hit and miss as well. I did set a recovery point before
installing SP2 but it's not there now when I need it!

I'm going to f-disk and when i come back I'll be in linux

I'm glad MS got it right for someone!

I've got a virually dead machine thanks to SP2 and since 8am this morning
I've been posting to all the sites I've used for years to try and get
solutions to the SP2 problems.

I've never experienced anything like e-mail responses I've got so far,(54
people have e-mailed since 8:30 saying they've experienced the same or
similar problems), I'm usualy lucky to get ONE response to a windows tech
problem!

I don't think the issue is whether you or me or any individual does a user
survey, surely it's down to MS to ensure that they're releasing something
that won't cause catastrophies on average user machines?

Glad you're one of the lucky ones,

Dar.

I agree with you. After installing this, I can no longer use wireless and my
system is SO SLOW. I am tempted to uninstall this SP2, but I wish that
Microsoft would fix the problem. Microsoft, if you are out there, HELP US!

reply.. many users found information and support in many places and have
used the information to apply SP2 successfully.. your apparent inability to
do the same is the fault of no one but yourself..

Non MS-firewalls block the installation!

reply.. had you found the information on how to apply SP2, you would have
disabled the firewall before installation..

> The installation if it works at all causes serious problems even in
> well operated and serviced PC-systems.

reply.. it categorically does NOT cause problems on well operated and
serviced systems, because well operated and serviced system are owned by
users who can find and act on information..

The PC-ressources of Home-PCs are severely stressed and at the limit of
ressources after
> installing the new SP2 update. The machine becomes extremely slow!

reply.. it is the responsibility of the computer user/buyer to ensure that
the machine has the necessary resources.. MS are not responsible for those
people who insist that 128mb, 256mb and small hard drives that were produced
with Win 98 installations in mind are anything like enough for the task of
running XP in any form..
>
> The Installation takes if it works at all, 2 to 3 hours, with download,

reply.. dependant also on the general overall speed of the computer in
question.. refer to the previous reply line.. a P4 3.0ghz, 1.0gb RAM, large
drive and ADSL will do a much faster job that a socket 370 Celeron 333,
256mb RAM and ADSL connection will ever manage..
>
> The widely used Norton antyvirus software ist not recognised,

reply.. Symantec had time to ensure that users of their products were made
aware of any problems.. some users appear to be aware, others do not..
Symantec is still working on fixes for some of their products..

> MS wants to sell now their own AntiVirus-Products. Any preinstalled
> Firewall will be inactivated and replaced by the MS-builtin firewall.

reply.. MS have no firewall to sell.. the SP2 firewall is enabled by default
in order to protect the initial installation when connected to the
internet.. that is a good thing as some users still have no idea what a
firewall is or does.. scary..
>
> There is no description, that the XP-operating-system ist severely
> changed with new and for many users absolutely unnecessary junk.

reply.. any update that is as large as SP2 is obviously going to change more
than a couple of items.. the term 'uneccessary junk' is purely subjective..
I will ignore that remark..

> In my case die LAN-WEB-connection was destroyed, the PC-IP-Adress

reply.. again, had you done any reearch at all, you may well have been able
to overcome this problem..
>

reply.. for many, a visit to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS is all that is required..
did you look there?..

reply.. SP2 sets its own recovery point in case of failure..

reply.. this statement is made on the basis that YOU had problems.. your
problems arise from not researching.. nobody was forcing you to install
SP2.. nobody said that you should not wait for fixes to 3rd party software
before installing SP2..

The moral here is to research.. typing queries into a Google search brings
up all kinds of help and support.. try using the facility instead of coming
here and complaining that MS screwed up.. YOU screwed up.. live with it..
learn from it..

There already were Beta versions of SP-2 available (RC-1 & RC-2)
available to everyone for several months before the final release of
SP-2.
Anyone that had concerns about their particular system could have
tried them

However what would you expect?
The result would possibly be similar.
Such testing is often better for businesses since they often have
several machines and can adequately test on a small sampling and
evaluate the affect if it was installed on all their systems.

No one said SP-2 is "required", other than you that is.
If you do not want to install SP-2 or want to wait, that is your
choice.
There is even a tool to help if you still want other Critical Updates
through Automatic Update:

Really, not mine and others that I also know.

The installation works most of the time.
It happens but not much that "PCs are severely stressed..."
However it is normal and expected for the computer to be slower for
about three days, the time it takes the prefetch file to rebuild.
Taking drastic action before then is pointless.

Really? that is several times longer than it has taken me.

Microsoft does not sell antivirus.
All recent versions of Norton are prcognized.
However Norton needs to make an update available before the status can
be monitored.
That is the responsibility of the AV manufacturer if they decide to
let Windows monitor their status.

.. Any preinstalled

Mine wasn't, in fact you can change at any time which you want to use.

Things happen in some cases.
Most often the fix is quick and simple.

Yes it can, 2 ways.
Add/Remove Programs
System Restore

You mean system Restore?

Do you mean Network Installation?
Or what is "single safety updates for the moment, with the choice
manualinstallation"

Nothing can guarantee a flawless installation, but research and
preparation can go a long way:

If you were to apply your thinking to computing in general, we would never
have made it past running DOS 2.11 on an 8086 processor.. look at how many
people try to load XP on a machine that was essentially designed for Win 95,
but just happened to be sold with Win 98.. are you telling us that it is not
the responsibility of the computer user to research whether or not the old
computer can handle XP?.. Microsoft have no control over what people try to
do with the Windows product line.. it is their job to produce
software/hardware and our job to learn how to use it..

In reply to Mike H. I would like to point out that I received SP2 as an
automatic update which downloded and installed without my intervention or
providing any advice. I agreed to this download and install contract with
Microsoft because I wanted to receive critical updates for my computer which
I need for when I work from home. I followed ALL onscreen instructions as
provided but the point is that that the product malfunctioned very badly.

Your argument that all computer users need to be fully experienced in every
aspect of operating system technology is as completely spurious as suggesting
that every car driver needs to be a fully qualified mechanic.

Every car driver needs to be qualfied in how to drive a car not how to build
and repair it. I didn't go to a 'back-street garage' to service my computer I
went to the manufacturer - Microsoft - who gave me back a piece of junk. I
wouldn't accept that from a car manufacturer and I don't see why I should
accept it from a software manufacturer.

If you have the time and interest to invest in operating system software
engineering then good luck to you, but don't expect everyone else to share
your interests or have the same priorities in life.
