update shield won't come back after downloading updates

How can I manually run or trigger the "icon / shield" to come back or how
can I manually trigger the install / setup screen of the updates simialar to
clicking on the icon/shield. There is a file name to that but I don't know
what it is. I ran into a situation where the shield popped up and said it
was downloading updates but then it never came back. The multi-colored
shield showed up on the "shutdown" icon but I'd like to beable to get the
"gold" shield process back so that I can see what going to be installed. I'm
fussy about what's being installed on my machine. Thanks Brad

I'm not sure whether this will do what you want, but try Start -> Run, then:

wuauclt /detectnow

Otherwise, go to the Windows Update/Microsoft Update web site, click on
Custom, and choose the updates you wish to install. They will not be
downloaded again if they are already downloaded and waiting.

I've noticed this behaviour on my Win XP SP2 laptop for the last few weeks.
I end up going back to the IE and checking for updates, and then during that
process the icon/shield finnaly comes back, but by then I just go with the
explicit IE-based update. I've had no such problem with my Win2K servers.

Run... (e.g. press Win-R and Enter

wuauclt.exe /detectnow

FWIW I would only do this when no other wuauclt.exe is active,
though I don't know for sure that that is necessary.
