Hi,

When I shutdown and choose install updates option, it just goes on and on
for several hours and never finishes. How do I get rid of the install
updates option offered in the shutdown dialogue.

Thanks for any help....

Hi David, after you have configured WU to suit your needs in accordance with
Engel's posting - to get rid of the downloaded updates from the temporary
folder -

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any
downloaded updates.

BTW there must be a reason the updates are not installing and perhaps you
should look at your windowsupdate.log for more clues as to why this problem
is occurring.

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error
code(s) associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install.
How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

All the above is assuming you're running Windows XP.

Go to the website and do a manual custom scan and see what happens. Then
install one of the updates as a test.
Assuming you're using Windows XP that is as Vista can't go to the website.
If all goes well, install the rest manually.
