Update site doesn't display properly in IE

I visited the Update site today and clicked "Custom" -- the site reported
that there were no high-priority updates to download, but in the left-hand
pane, it said that there were 7 "Software, Optional" updates.

I clicked on "Software, Optional" to try to get those updates, and instead
of being able to view or select those 7 updates, I found that the Update home
page reloaded into the frame on the right.

I know it's hard to visualize what that means, so I posted a screenshot:

If I click "Custom" in the interior frame, IE freezes up and I have to use
Task Manager to shut it down.

Any thoughts/explanations/solutions would be welcome.

Something is interfering, probably on the link.
Describe your environment. If you are using a third-party firewall
try using only the XP firewall; if you are blocking Cookies, don't.
Etc.

If you have access to another identical system which is working properly
taking a packet trace on each and comparing the traces would most likely
lead to some insight about the cause of the symptom.

Good luck

I've been dealing with the Windows Update official support people on this;
they ran me through a lot of suggestions like yours, and unfortunately the
problem persists.

They have no more ideas except to suggest that I pursue a solution through
the Windows XP support team - which will cost me $35.00.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
