Update some failed upadtes, then low space message which is wrong

I opted to install latest windows updates, some of the updates failed. I was
prompte dto reboot machine. When I logged in the machine said low on space
only 1MB left on harddrive, However when I goto my computer there is 17.3GB
of space. I had to free up 200MB to launch System Restore, which when
finally run does not allow me to go to an earlier restor point than the one
listed which was created aftre the attempted update.

Please help!!!!!

Update: Rebooted machines in safe mode - tried system restore there, no
earlier points. Booted windows normally and NOWWW my machine is reading
510MB.

Seconds before running the botched update 17.3GB, now 510MB. Does anyone
have anyidea what could have happened. I'm effectively crippled.

I've run disk cleanup (nothing there of course), uninstalled the three
updates that actually installed. Still no recovery of harddrive space.
Where could 16GB go! Why was my harddrive snatched away?
