update starts scanning and never returns

I start the express process to scan PC for updates and it looks like it
starts but never ends. I don't ever get the udpate window with choices to
update.

overnight. probably 24 hours. Multiple times. I don't know how to tell if it
is working or if any process is running. Just get window with back and forth
box running saying it is scanning.

I have tried express and custome and the same thing. Starts scan and never
completes to give you a list of updates to process. No one seems to have
answer.
