I seem to have the same problem as 'group6' mentioned on the
2004-04-21: On my NT4 SP6a BDC WINS is longer able to start - after I
have installed the Security Updates 835732 and 828741. Error message
is:
4193 WINS could not create the notification socket. Make sure the
TCP/IP driver is installed and running properly.
4165 WINS has encountered an error that is causing it to shut down.

I've tried to uninstall the updates, installed sp6 again, uninstalled
and reinstalled WINS, rebooted - of course - several times, but
nothing seems to work. I do not want to reinstall the server, so
anybody out there who can help?
Thanks a lot in advance

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=nts40

Otherwise, I suggest you consider putting Wins on a new Windows 2000 or 2003
server. NT is dead, dude.

Thanks for your tip, but the WINS Client(TCP/IP) at 'devices' was set
to 'automatic' and started and still the service doesn't start (error
message: could not start the windows internet name service; error
0002: the system cannot find the file specified - the event viewer
showing the same message as mentioned below). Any other idea?

Unfortunately there is no chance to update to w2k or 2003 (due to a
little lack of money), so I still have to 'live with the dead'

To whom it may concern:
I solved my problem!
Just a day before the update I changed my services-file
(winnt/system32/drivers/etc/services) to a new one, not knowing that a
lot of entries were missing in this file. With the next scheduled
reboot (after having done the microsoft updates) the OS started to use
the damaged services-file and that was the reason for WINS not
starting (and not the Microsoft updates).
I replaced the services-file with a saved one, rebooted and WINS was
working properly again. Then I started do do all the updates again and
everything is still fine!
