I was not aware of the log. It showed an error 8024402c was occurring. I
searched the newsgroup and found reference to a helpful link:

With this info I was able to find that my proxy settings had been lost, so I
reset these and all is fine now.
BTW when following the instruction in the Microsoft article, I had to insert
a step betwee steps 3 and 4 in the proxy section to import the Internet
Explorer settings using the proxycfg -u feature.
I've documented all this in the hopes that it is helpful to others.
