Hi. Thanks for the help.
Whenever I go to the help and support center on my start menu and choose
"keep your computer up to date," windows says I am not connected to the
internet, even tho I am. (I got here after all...) When I try the repair
option and windows tries to renew the ip , it gives me a message saying it
can't do it and to see my internet provider. Doesn't make sense as this is
the ONLY time I cannot connect to the net...

I suspect that you have a firewall in the way somewhere - check the
settings.

I have Zone alarm, but nothing I see in it shows any windows program is being
blocked. Would the program have a name I don't recognize?

quite possibly - first activate the Windows Firewall (I assume you're on
XP??), then disable ZA, and see what happens.
which version of ZA are you using?

hi noel. I tried that. It didn't work. I am using ZoneAlarm
version:5.5.062.000. You know, it isn't that big a deal I guess, it's just
bugging me. I have not recently updated any drivers or anything either! The
only thing I did 3 weeks ago was try to connect to another internet
connection (at someone else's house). I was not uscessful. I then brought
my computer home and re-connected. Ever since then, this "bug." Or whatever
ya call it.

Ah - that may give a clue..... check out your Network settings, and make
sure that you don't have odd proxy settings active

Hi I was on vacation. Thanks for your help, but don't know how to check for
"odd proxy settings." Also, I don't know if this is significant, but you
know when you go to Start and then Help and Support and then it updates
itself ( near the "Did you know" sentence)? Mine says last update in
September! This is getting troublesome as I am trying to set up WiFi and
can't open help links to MSN to check and see what sort of stuff I need.
Thanks,
Jen

The 'Did you know?' is simply (AFAIK) a collection of tips - which should
change on every access to the page - so is not really relevant to this,
unless you're saying that it's the same every time you reboot, and/or access
the page. (having said that, I've just accessed it three times on this box
and got the same ' When you are connected to the Internet, ......' message -
although I haven't rebooted)

.....interesting - I was a bit slow in responding to the prompt from my
firewall to allow an outgoing connection for HELPCTR.EXE, and just received
the 'you need to be connected' message myself! - clicking on the Connect Now
button got me where I was supposed to go (<aside> Quiet, Figgs!!</aside>) -
and no further hassle.

Check that ZoneAlarm isn't blocking HELPCTR.EXE at all - (TCP or UDP out,
c:\Windows\PCHEALTH\HLPCTR\Binaries\HELPCTR.EXE)

Hiya. I almost give up on the problem. I went through zone alarm looking for
anything like that and it didn't work, however your sentence is a little
cryptic to me, quote: "TCP or UDP out,
c:\Windows\PCHEALTH\HLPCTR\Binaries\HELPCTR.EXE", so I may not have done what
you meant to do. On another topic, do you know why my friend's computer
running ME would be so slooow to boot up? Does ME prefetch?
Thanks, Jen
PS who is Figgs?

Figgs is an old 'sparring partner' in the Win ME groups

I've given you a response in your new thread (didn't realise it was you!)

I'm not familiar with the ZoneAlarm interface - but there should be an
option to view your blocked outgoing ports/connections - and it should
display the programs which are either blocked or allowed (depending on the
way ZA is built)
Look there for the HELPCTR entry, and see what it's allowed to do - and then
make sure that it's allowed to go out to the Internet.
