I have my puter set for auto updates. Upon booting up today, I get the
message that one update is ready for downloading and installing. Today is
not the second Tuesday. What update could it be?

How do you get this message, is it the Windows Update shield in the
notification area of the task bar and if it is have you clicked on it to
find out what it tells you ?

I do not have a clue - why don't you tell us what update it is?
Could it be for DST perhaps??

Yes, it was by the shield in the notification area of the task bar. I
clicked on it and IIRC it merely said that an update was ready and I could
work on the puter while it downloads and installs. I don't recall the
notification stating what the nature of the update is. It took only a
minute to download and install.

What operating system?
What update?
If you do not know check the history by opening the Windows Update
history
"Review your update history" or "View update history", possibly others
depending on Windows version and Service Pack level.

If you click on Windows Update in your Start Menu, you can view your update
history. I believe today there was an update for Windows Defender's
definition file...

Err ... it doesn't matter HOW the update comes down, someone.
Whether you're on cable/dsl/dial up/ or the bottom of the ocean <w>

It was most likely the definition update for Windows Defender.

Go to Start in the bottom left corner of the Task Bar
Click it
Now click Run
Copy & paste the below into the Open: line

%windir%\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.log

Click OK
The ReportingEvents.log will open.
Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the log
The last entry will show what the update was

After you click the update system-tray icon (or pop-up balloon), a
dialog box should open with two buttons. If you click on the Custom
button, then you can see which updates are going to be installed --
along with check boxes to deselect anything you don't want.

What's IIRC?
