Update turns itself off

Microsoft Update keeps turning itself off. This recently started happening
for no apparent reason. I have completed virus scans and there is no problem
there so I am not sure where the problem lies. I do not need to turn off the
computer or log out of windows for the updater to turn itself off, it turns
itself off within minutes off being turned on. Any ideas?
