when computer starts up microsoft update begins and a "svchost.exe" process
runs using 100% of my memory. have to end process in task manager to do
anything else. after this i am unable to install updates and my sound card
stops working. have ran virus scan, "regcure", and anti-spyware numerous
times as well as system restore. any help?

I assume you mean 100% processor utilisation, rather than 100% memory.

For a fix to this problem, please do BOTH of the following:

1. For 32-bit systems, download and save to hard disk, and then install:
<http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>

2. (not for Vista) Download and install update KB927891:
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891>

If the first of these produces an error message about "Update agent already
installed", then execute the installer again manually, with parameter
/wuforce as in:

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

After the fixes have been installed, doing a Microsoft Update or Automatic
Update might still take some time (though not as much as before) and
processor and disk usage, but it should not lock out user-level interaction
with the system and applications, so it should not be an inconvenience.

Doesn't seem so....

If you try and print anything after installing the patch as directed at this
site:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1071

Your printer should be extremely slow, as well as opening other programs
while the machine is checking for updates.

So far I have only documented the 99% CPU usage problem concerning Windows
Updates to machines running WINXP SP2, and Office 2003 SP2. Anyone know
otherwise??? I have heard someone complaining about this with a WIN2K
machine, but have not seen the issue on a WIN2K machine.
