Update v. MSBA

I have a general question regarding these two products. What is the main
difference? I check w/windows update and it reports one patch missing;
however using MSBA, it reports many more. The patches are hotfixes and not
related to Office but strictly to the O/S. Shavlik's other product also
detects those patches as missing when win update does not. Is this a known
issue?
