From the windows update website, after clicking either "express" or "custom",
if I click a link from the main frame of the page, everything seems normal.
But, if I click one of the links on the side frame such as "Software,
Optional" or "Hardware, Optional", or "Restore hidden...", the entire windows
update page will reload inside the main frame of the original page. So I end
up with a page within a page. If I then click the "custom" button in that
second page, IE freezes.

Is BitComet installed ? If so, open IE, click Tools, Manage Add-ons.
Disable the BitComet add-on prior to the system to the system's visit to
Windows Update.
